MARATHON, FLORIDA – REEFS ‘A-BLAZING! In this jaw-dropper of an episode, Poveromo joins up with Marathon, Florida Keys, guide Captain Jimmy Gagliardini. Heading offshore in a 15- to 20-knot northeast wind and aboard Poveromo’s Mako 284 – MARC VI - the duo heads to a specific spot along a reef, and drops anchor in 80-feet of water. Here, they power chum up hundreds of large, hungry yellowtail snapper.  After catching several “flag” yellowtails the traditional way (freelining small pieces of bait), they toss out handfuls of live pilchards and succeed in “live chumming” the yellowtails into maddening feeding blitzes at the surface!  With the fish now in a frenzied and reckless eating mode, Poveromo and Gagliardini go on to catch the largest yellowtails of the trip on Rapala Rattlin’ Rap lures!  And if catching trophy yellowtail on crankbaits wasn’t enough action for them, they later re-anchor over a shallow patch reef and do the very same thing with monster-size mangrove snapper!  And just wait until you see Poveromo hook, fight and land a trophy-class, seven-pound mangrove snapper on a swimming plug!  Poveromo and team based out of the new Holiday Inn Express in Marathon, and docked the MARC VI behind the hotel.  For more info on the Florida Keys, visit: http://www.fla-keys.com/

The two find themselves back here once again – casting top water and sinking Rapalas and also live-pilchards for sea trout.  After a day of catching trout and an unexpected encounter with a giant tarpon, they regroup for the following morning’s venture into the Biscayne River Canal; Their goal in this urban, freshwater canal system is to see if they still have the knack at catching largemouth bass, like they did as kids.  The bass give them a bit of a challenge, but Flora hooks a tarpon and Poveromo lands a snook, proving you just can’t wring the “salt” out of these guys – even in freshwater!

Migdalski takes top honors here with a 16-pounder! The Shallow-Water MARC docked at the Indian Neck Yacht Club on the Branford River.
