The captains and pros listed below are among the very best in the sport of saltwater fishing. Their attention to detail and ability to consistently locate and catch fish is unparalleled. Even the most seasoned veterans can learn something from them. Each one has played an instrumental part in the creation of my World of Saltwater Fishing television series and I’m proud to recognize their contributions.

Captain Jimmy Gagliardini -  When it comes to catching dolphin and blackfin tuna offshore, sailfish, kingfish, snapper and grouper on the reefs, and tarpon and permit in the channels and around the bridges of Marathon in the Florida Keys, Jimmy is one of the very best.  A veteran captain who has fished extensively at some of the world’s best billfish destinations, he operates High Caliber charters from the Hammocks in Marathon.  He also served as a faculty member for the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series, when the tour landed in Islamorada in 2010.  Jimmy can be reached at 305-395-0915.

Captain Barb Fusco  -  With a deep passion for fishing that has spanned over 30 years, and the desire to share her enthusiasm for the sport she loves with others, Barb Fusco obtained her U.S.C.G. license in 2004.  Today, she is one of the most sought-after guides on Long Island.  Among her specialties are shallow-water bucktailing for fluke and fishing for striped bass on the “flats” and shallows. She fishes Long Island Sound aboard her 23-foot, outboard-powered boat, LUV 2 FISH, from Ralph’s Fishing Station in Mount Sinai, and does the flats- and shallow-water bassing aboard her 10’ raft.  For more information, visit:  www.luv2fishcharters.com.

Captain Gary Borland – Few people are as respected in Palm Beach guiding circles like Gary Borland.  Be it redfish, snook, tarpon, seatrout and trophy class jack crevalle in the ICW and inlets, or kingfish, sailfish, grouper and snapper on the reefs, Borland does it all, and often in grandiose fashion.  His specialties include light tackle, live-bait fishing, yet he’s also quite adept at catching fish on artificials.  Once a full time and in-demand guide, Gary now serves as a rep for Penn Fishing Tackle.  Gary can be reached at: 561-747-1057.

Harry Vernon III – A native of Key Biscayne, Florida, Harry Vernon III was raised on catching offshore game fish in local and Bahamian waters. An ardent live-baiter for sailfish, tuna, kingfish, and bottom-fish, he’s also at home trolling for wahoo, dolphin and marlin, and even night-drifting for swordfish.  He’s even tough on the local Biscayne Bay snook and seatrout populations!  When he’s not out fishing or running the family tackle business, Vernon tours as a faculty member with the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series.  Harry can be reached at 305-374-4661, or via www.captharry.com.

Captain John Oughton –  Captain John Oughton has held a 100 ton USCG license for over 20 years and has charter fished for 30 years. His extensive fishing resume includes the north Atlantic canyons, Cape Hatteras, and many other big game destinations.  He currently fishes the waters off the Florida Keys between October and June and then heads to Ocean City, Maryland, to catch tuna and marlin throughout the summer.  A consistent tournament winner, John is an authority on dead bait trolling as well as live baiting. He can be reached at www.prettyworkcharters.com.

Read Hendon –   Read Hendon is the Assistant Director of the Center for Fisheries Research and Development at the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL). He started his M.S. work at the GCRL in 1996, completing his advanced degree in fisheries ecology in 1998. Since that time, Read has worked in the fisheries discipline on a variety of programs, ranging from monitoring and assessment of important coastal species to juvenile spotted seatrout ecology. In 2009, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council appointed Read to two-year terms on its Standing Scientific and Statistical Committee, Coastal Migratory Pelagics (Mackerel) Advisory Panel and Red Drum Advisory Panel
Read currently manages the Gulf-wide Sport Fish Tag and Release Program, an angler-cooperative research project focusing on cobia and tripletail, and oversees the State’s finfish monitoring program in conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.  In addition to managing several grant-funded research projects, he also serves as the Inter-Agency Coordinator for the USM Oil Spill Response Team and as the GCRL Project Manager for the Port of Gulfport Restoration Program's Environmental Services contract. In February, Read was recognized as the 2009 Fisheries Conservationist of the Year by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation, and he is also a part-time doctoral student in USM's Department of Coastal Sciences working with juvenile spotted seatrout.  Read can be reached by email at read.hendon@usm.edu

Carl Grassi - A resident of Coral Springs, Florida, Carl Grassi is an ardent angler who lives to fish. When he’s not managing his business – Carl’s Sunoco on West Sample Road in Coral Springs – Carl can usually be found fishing out of Pompano Beach’s Hillsboro Inlet. He enjoys live-baiting for kingfish and sailfish, trolling for wahoo and dolphin, running and gunning for dolphin, and dropping for swordfish. He’s a fan of the Bahamas, where he enjoys bottom fishing and offshore trolling. Carl also owns a skiff and spends some of his time chasing snook and tarpon. Carl can be reached at 954-755-8799, or at: goracingwithcg@aol.com.

Terry Flora –   Catching his very first fish - a sheepshead, in Naples, Florida, when he was two years old, Terry Flora’s passion for fishing is still going strong at 49 years of age! A resident of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Terry enjoys backcountry, flats, and big game fishing.  He cites offshore fishing as his favorite, because of the “big surprise” that could show up behind a bait at anytime!  His greatest fishing accomplishment was a third place finish in a Palm Beach kingfish, wahoo and dolphin tournament, from a field of over 600 anglers.  He has spent the past decade fishing mainly in Flamingo and Islamorada with his son Austin, and father, Charlie.  During the heat of summer, Terry prefers lobstering and spearfishing.

Migdalski does not currently charter for hire, but you may reach him at tom.migdalski@yale.edu.

Captain Greg Poland -  Greg’s passion for fishing began as a child, as saltwater” played an important role in his family history. His grandfather was a captain of a 3 masted schooner, and Greg recalls sitting on his grandfather’s knee as a child and hearing of his great adventures at sea. Greg began guiding in Miami in 1989, and now plies his trade in Islamorada, where he also resides. His fishing experiences include the inshore and offshore waters of the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica and Cuba, but Greg is quick to claim that, for him, there is no place quite like the Florida Keys and backcountry of Everglades National Park. Greg can be reached at 305-852-9940, or at www.gregpoland.com; Facebook: fishing in the Florida Keys.
